PRE ALGEBRA TUTORIALS
With Exercises For Each Tutorial

Learning the Basics

You need a good understanding of basic math before continuing with pre algebra and algebra.

Basic math includes adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing; fractions, decimals, rounding numbers; to name a few.

If your not familiar with basic math, books are available online and at bookstores.
For pre algebra - you can buy or practice at many online websites for free, or buy a pre algebra book, which covers all necessary math components needed.

Google Apps Free

In addition to free websites, and buying books, you can download many free basic math and algebra apps through the Google Apps store, with a compatible android cell phone or tablet. Some apps are entirely free, while others have some free algebra math with the choice of additional math problems or features for a fee.

Many websites have free algebra guides, problems, practice, tests, quizzes, additional learning aides.

Algebra Meanings Things To Know

There are several terms, concepts, math components, algebra rules, you need to know in pre and algebra.
On this page we mention some of them, and in each tutorial you will learn more about them.

Math Properties

In math, properties are the - + x, in an expression or equation. They need to be solved in a specific order in each math problem.

Order of Operations

The 'order of operations' in algebra, refers to how the math problem is solved, If not, the outcome of the problem can be affected.
Solve each math problem in this order: brackets, exponents, multiplication, division, addition subtraction, left to right for all.

In algebra, multiplications and divisions, are completed (left to right) before additions and substractions (left to right)

SIMPLIFYING

When solving or simplfying an equation, you place 'like properties together', then solve the problem.

4+2+5+1-9=In this math problem, the 4, 2, 5, 1 are positive and like properties; the 9 is negative. So, to solve by adding like properties together, simply add all the + numbers, then subtract the negative number
12-9=3

Variable

Variables are x,y, z, usually a letter, used to represent an unknown value.
x = 3

Constants

Constants, such as a number, fraction , negative number:
2, -6, 1/2

Coefficients

5x
The 5 in this variable is known as the coefficient of the variable x

Terms

A term can be either of:
coefficient, variable, constants
5x, 5mn, and 6 are all considered terms

Expressions

Expressions include one or more terms:
5x + 2r + 5

Equations

Equations include two expressions, and they are separated by = sign. The value on one side of the expression is equal to the value of the other side of the expression once solved

4 + 6 = 5 × 2
l = 3 × w
3w + 4xy + 5 = 2w + 3

The Rules of Algebra

Learn the Rules of Divisibility and the Order of Operations, because knowing them will make solving your algebra problems easier.
And, Memorizing Important Algebra Formulas will make it easier to solve them in a timely manner.

RULES OF DIVISIBLITY

Divisibility by 2: A number is divisible by 2 if the last digit in the number is 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8.
Divisibility by 3: A number is divisible by 3 if the sum of the digits in the number is divisible by 3.
Divisibility by 4: A number is divisible by 4 if the last two digits in the number form a number divisible by 4.
Divisibility by 5: A number is divisible by 5 if the last digit is 0 or 5.
Divisibility by 6: A number is divisible by 6 if it is divisible by both 2 and 3.
Divisibility by 8: A number is divisible by 8 if the last three digits form a number divisible by 8.
Divisibility by 9: A number is divisible by 9 if the sum of the digits of the number is divisible by 9.
Divisibility by 10: A number is divisible by 10 if it ends in 0.
Divisibility by 11: A number is divisible by 11 if the sums of the alternate digits are different by 0, 11, 22, or 33, or any two-digit multiple of 11. In other words, say you have a six-digit number: Add up the first, third, and fifth digits — the odd ones. Then add the digits in the even places — second, fourth, and sixth. Then subtract the smaller of those totals from the larger total, and if the answer is a multiple of 11, the original number is divisible by 11.
Divisibility by 12: A number is divisible by 12 if the last two digits form a number divisible by 4 and if the sum of the digits is divisible by 3.

ORDER OF OPERATIONS

To complete math problems in algebra, there is a specific order in which problems should be solved, that is:

"Simplify the expressions inside parentheses ( ), brackets [ ], braces { } and fractions bars.
Evaluate all powers.-exponents powers and roots
Do all multiplications and divisions from left to right.
Do all additions and subtractions from left to right".(2)

Using this, will not only solve your math problems properly, but also make them easier to solve.

PRE ALGEBRA MATH

Evaluate Expressions

6+z=12

is a algebraic expression. In order to solve the problem, we must evaluate the expression; the letter z, needs to be replaced with a 'number', and for this problem, z=6, and to solve the problem, 6 + 6 = 12

Evaluate this expression for

z=2 x=2
6z + 5x = ?

6 x 2 + 5 x 2
12 + 10 = 22
Replace the variable with the number, then evaluate the expression, solve the problem.

INEQUALITY AND EQUATION SYMBOLS

Math sentences use symbols to respresent their equality or inequality:

x=z means x is equal to z

whereas

x > z means x is greater than z

x < z means x is lesser than z
