PRE ALGEBRA EXPRESSIONS
Distributive Property and Combining Like Terms
In Algebra, you may have like terms in brackets. These have to be removed before you can
solve the expression. To do so, us the distributive property to remove the brackets, then
solve by combining like terms together.
Examples:
6(4x + 2x) - 6y = Use distributive property to remove brackets - Multiply 6 by 4x and 2x
24x + 12x - 6y= Combine the like terms together, then add the unlike term
36x -6y Answer
PRACTICE EXPRESSIONS
Practice Solving Algebra Expressions
Distributive Property and Combining Like Terms:
FYI - what's in brackets must be solved first
To do so, multiply the number (term) outside the brackets by the terms inside the brackets
5(3x -7y + 6)+ 5x -6 =
2(6a + 7b)- 3a + 4b=
-7(x + 3)+5 + 6y=
6(a + 4 + 3) -4=
4(a + 2b) + 3c=
ANSWERS With Explanations
5(3x -7y + 6)+ 5x -6 = To remove brackets, use distributive property, multiply
15x - 35y + 30 + 5x - 6 =
Now combine the like terms
15x + 5x - 35y + 30 -6 =
Now solve
20x - 35y + 24 Answer
2(6a + 7b)- 3a + 4b= Multiply term outside brackets by terms inside brackets,Use distributive property
12a + 14b - 3a + 4b
Now combine the like terms
12a - 3a + 14b + 4b = Solve
9a + 18b Answer
-7(x + 3)+5 + 6y= Multiply term outside brackets by terms inside brackets,Use distributive property
-7x - 21 + 5 + 6y=
Now combine the like terms
6y - 7x - 21 + 5 = Solve
6y - 7x - 16 Answer
6(a + 4 + 3) -4= Multiply term outside brackets by terms inside brackets,Use distributive property
6a + 24 + 18 -4=
Now combine like terms
6a + 42 - 4 = Solve
