SUBTRACTING POLYNOMIALS

To subtract 2 polynomials; add the opposite of the polynomial BEING SUBTRACTED

EXAMPLE:
(12x² - 5x + 6) - (6x² - 3x - 3) First, take all the terms out of the brackets
12x²-5x + 6 - 6x² + 3x + 3 = add the opposite of the polynomial BEING SUBTRACTED:6x² becomes -6x², -3x becomes 3x, -3 becomes 3
(12x² - 6x²) + (-5x + 3x) + (6 + 3) =Place all the like terms together; then solve for the terms
6x² - 2x + 9 Answer

PRACTICE SUBTRACTING POLYNOMIAL

ANSWER With Explanation

(12a - 10b + c) - (6a + 3b - c) First, take all the terms out of the brackets
12z - 10b + c - 6a - 3b + c = add the opposite of the polynomial BEING SUBTRACTED: 6a becomes -6a, 3b becomes -3b, -c becomes c
(12a - 6a) + (-10b - 3b) + (c + c) = Place all the like terms together; then solve for the terms
6a - 13b + 2c Answer
